Kingsport woman arrested after refusing to pay for beer she drank in Wal-Mart; man for bailing on bar tabs
KINGSPORT ? Two Kingsport residents were arrested Sunday after allegedly refusing to pay for alcohol they had consumed.
One incident involved a shopper at Wal-Mart, and the other a patron at Garfield?s in the Kingsport Town Center.
An incident report from the Kingsport Police Department says officers were called to the Wal-Mart on Fort Henry Drive about 3 p.m. Near the back of the store they found store employees holding a woman on the ground.
According to loss prevention personnel, the woman drank two Michelob Ultra beers from a six-pack while shopping. She then allegedly placed what remained of the six-pack on the shelf and attempted to leave without paying.
When loss prevention stopped the woman and asked about the beer, ?she became combative,? according to the police report. They then restrained her until police arrived.
The woman, Sandra Elizabeth Craps, 39, 175 Anco Place, allegedly admitted to police that she drank the beers. She offered to pay for the six-pack, but Wal-Mart elected to place charges against Craps for theft of less than $500.
In addition, a check of Craps? records found she was wanted by the Swansea (S.C.) Police Department for failure to comply with a court arrangement. Craps was arrested on charges of being a fugitive from justice and public intoxication.
At approximately 8 p.m. Sunday, police were called to Garfield?s Restaurant and Pub in the Kingsport Town Center. Employees claimed an intoxicated male had left the restaurant without paying for his $64.75 bill.
Upon arrival, police found mall security had detained the man, Ned Smith Keesling, 38, 100 Boulder Court. An incident reports says Keesling appeared highly intoxicated and had trouble standing under his own power.
Keesling allegedly told police he had no way of paying for the bill and then became belligerent. According to the police report, Keesling was ?cussing loudly at witnesses and security staff.? He was placed under arrest for public intoxication.
Police said it was learned that Keesling had left two other restaurants without paying the bills. He was charged with additional counts of theft of services and booked into the Kingsport jail.
